Audi A5 Sportback 45TFSi quattro S Line Review
What a stunner Audi’s A5 is.
The 5 door Sportback uses a platform, engine, and transmission tried and true. The range includes a smart coupe, an evergreen convertible, and our 5 door hatch.

A5 is one of the more successful executive hatches. It is slightly larger than the 1st generation, replaced by this one in 2017. A5 Sportback is 4733 mm long, with a 2824 mm wheelbase. It is 1843 mm wide and 1386 mm high.
S Line models get delicious 19” wheels and S Line badging.
Although all models share handsome good looks, the 5 door has a hatch, created by a graceful roofline. Doors have pillarless windows and a b pillar so sturdy, it will outlast time. The large rear hatch has a foot-operated open/close option. That’s very handy when your hands full of goodies.
The lithe body is festooned with sensors of all kinds. Bang one of those bumpers against a wall, and you are in for a world of pain when the bill comes.
Is as stunning as the exterior.
Machined metal trim adorns dash and doors. Sumptuous leather covers almost everything else. I’ve no doubt at least some of what you see is pleather, but who cares.
The new A5 dash design is a triumph.
A line of vents sweeps across the full width, with the driver having a separate vent nearest the door. Switches are within easy reach and everything is clearly labeled. There is a large central dial on the console with a track pad option on top. The console has wooden trim with a Qi wireless charger in the armrest.
Climate controls live further up the centre stack which is crowned by a 7” LCD screen, which seems a bit small by luxury car standards. There is no touch input so using Apple CarPlay can take some coming to terms with.
Bang and Olufsen sound has 19 speakers with a 755w/16 channel amp. The sound is magnificent, and I suggest leaving the adjustments at ZERO to get the best tones. Don’t be tempted to make it boom.
There is much more whiz-bangery, but the cabin’s best feature is the eerie quiet, even on the highway. Around town, the loudest noise is the air whispering from the vents.
On the Road
A5 is light and very easy. The is automated parking to enter and exit tight spots, and it is always watching out for the best place to park. It is as easy to use as pressing a button and following the instructions.
Drive modes give a decent choice of pre-set engine/transmission/suspension/steering options, but I preferred “comfort.” Light steering, supple ride, and smooth transmission changes are complimented by snappy performance. 0-100 is dismissed in 6 seconds for those selecting the sportier modes.
Be warned, those modes do dreadful things to your fuel figures.
We headed southwest down the M5 for a light lunch at Picton’s George Vi Inn. This historic Inn was a coaching on the old road from Sydney to Melbourne. It’s hard to believe now that such a narrow road ever carried the traffic the current road contends with.
After parking the A5 out front, we headed in to the pub, and its warm front bar.
After lunch, and a quick turn through the surrounding hills, now velvety green after recent rain, we turned for home. Most of the drive was done with the wipers at full pelt, but no one complained.
Lane control and cruise control keeps the A5 centered and a safe distance from other traffic.
General consensus was that we all would have been happy to head south for as long as the fuel lasted.
